FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

I don't receive any answer by email from MacRailSoft ! (Spamfilters)
The most likely reason is that your email provider has either a local technical problem or is blocking our emails to you.
Please note that we answer every email, so if you don't get any response from us there's some technical problem preventing our emails from reaching you.
Quite often email providers protect their customers from spam by actively blocking emails they consider harmful, some even completely cut you off parts of the internet so you're no longer able to receive emails from specific domains or IP address ranges, e.g. by us.

Providers we've had trouble in the past due to this rigid handling of emails include:

  • charter.net
  • chartermi.net
  • comcast.net

In order to let us contact you or send you a license key you'll need a working email address.
Unfortunately we are not able to contact you otherwise, e.g. by sending you a traditional letter at our own expenses. It's just not possible for a company of our size.
If you don't get a response from us please check the spam folder of your email client or contact us from a different email account.

When will I get my license key ?
Usually it takes up to 48h (often much faster) until you receive your license key.

How do I convert older worksheets to be opened on Intel Macs ?
Worksheets created with a RailModeller version prior to 3.0 use a different file format. This file format cannot be opened on Intel Macs. To convert old worksheets please follow these simple steps:

1. Please ensure RailModeller is not running
2. In the Finder choose “File > Get Info” for the RailModeller application icon
3. Check the “Open using Rosetta” option
4. After launching RailModeller the About box states that it’s running in PowerPC mode
5. Simply open and save the layouts you need to convert
6. Quit RailModeller
7. Remove the “Open using Rosetta” option

The next time RailModeller is started the About box should state that the program is running in Intel mode and the converted worksheets will work just fine.

Why does every click in the worksheet insert a new element ?
You are working in the Create/Select mode. This is the tool selected by default when RailModeller starts up. You can choose to the Select tool (hotkey: S) where elements can be selected with the mouse. Clicks in empty areas of the worksheet have no effect when using the Select tool.

How do I plan gradients or easements ?
Currently all elements are located in a plane at height 0 (= floor level).
Future releases will allow to specify the heights and gradients of elements to enable full three-dimensional planning.

I can't find a library for XYZ in the trial version. Is it available in the registered version ?
The libraries are similar for the trial and the registered, fully featured version.
The only difference for the trial version consists of the disabled "Save" and "Print" functions.

Why are tracks from vendor XYZ not included in the release ?
New libraries for the various vendors are constantly added to the distribution.
There are few vendors which, for various reasons, don't provide the specifications of their tracks. Without this information it is often not possible to create these particular libraries.
If you have any detailed information about a track system not yet included in the RailModeller distribution, please feel free to send them to us!

Can RailModeller export in any vector format ?
Currently only exporting to bitmap formats (PNG, JPG, TIFF, PSD) is supported.
We plan to support export to the a vector format like PDF or SVG in a future release.

What are the plans for future releases ?
There are lots of plans for making the application an ever better solution for layout design on Mac OS.
Planned featured include:

  • Support for creating variable base plates
  • Support for layers similar to modern drawing applications
  • Assistants for interactively creating buildings, bridges or streets
  • Full three-dimensional planning with arbitrary gradients and heights for elements
  • Modelling of terrain and landscapes

Does RailModeller support Mac OS 9 ?
Current versions no longer support Mac OS 9.
However, you can get the last Mac OS 9 version 3.0.5 here.

I've registered version X, do I have to pay for the update ?
Registered users can use all future releases of the application without any restrictions.
In case you have lost your license key for any reason feel free to contact us for assistance.
See also next question.

How can I turn of the limitations of the demoversion as a registered user ?
